practical solutions that address the specific needs of the customer
while ensuring that all projects are delivered in an expedient and cost
effective manner.
The Client
The Attic Lounge Bar is adjacent to "Gilligan's" the largest backpacker hostel in North Queensland. The core idea was to design a comfortable and inviting venue that sparked nostalgic memories through the re-use of discarded domestic items, triggering memories of home and reinforcing identity. The philosophy behind The Attic was to activate and stimulate patron's sensory experiences by creating a texturally and spatially rich interior, reflecting the clients brief to offer a unique venue in the Cairns entertainment precinct.
The design reveals the role of the 'domestic interior' as the site of memory, and how these objects not only shape our identity, but the spaces we inhabit. In addition, it aims to inspire the community to realise the value and potential of items that we dispose of regularly when they are no longer new, no longer fashionable or a little broken.
The Challenge
There were a number of challenges with this project including:
• To deliver on the creative vision of the architects, we used a range of lighting and angles to create a 3D shadow look to feature the antique pieces. Getting the ambience right was the key to delivering this vision;
• The existing building is very old, the way in which we had to install cables into existing and new joinery was very complex;
• The room layout posed a huge acoustical challenge;
• The room was exceptionally dark, and was a problem for existing security cameras. We needed to improve the lighting and we used warm white light in the DJ box to offset the darkness of the room;
• The upgrade of the entire head end, while keeping the venue open, requiring night shifts of 3am to 8am;
• The use of abseilers to install lighting into outside trees;
• Automating the whole venue using a Creston Control system to manage the lighting, audio, video, fire, and security systems.
This attention to detail is reflected in the complexity of the installation’s requirements – integrating existing audiovisual equipment with new technology to form a complete system.

The Result
Both JVG Sound and the Client are delighted with the result. This was an enormous project, requiring numerous changes during the installation phase. The end result (please see pictures) speaks volumes for JVG’s expertise in these types of installations.
